It seems possible.
Be sure to configure the CB login module with CB Plugins integration set to Yes (to ensure Auto Group is called).

In my test I have created a file like this:



And Auto Group is set as follow:
cb_group;Uploader;Uploader;true
cb_group;Downloader;Downloader;true
cb_group;Registered;Registered;true

When the user register itself he must choose the group, and the result is Registered is unassigned.
