Sorry,
but I don't know Fabrik so good. As far as I know it allows to build complex forms and custom data. Description from its official site:

Fabrik is a highly Flexible Joomla! component for building custom web applications. Create beautiful forms to allow your users to enter data, then display the data in lists, map, calendars, timelines, charts and more!

So I can't figure out what you really need when you say "retrieve data from a selected list".

Could you, please, add some additional information?

Hello,
i am also intrested in Fabrik plugin

the reason i am asking this
is that with Fabrik you can build custom forms

so in my case i want users to be able to take pictures with mobile phones and post them into joomla backend
i was thinking of fabrik
but if you can implement post a new article in k2 with image that would be nice also

as far as i can see you only can get list of k2 items you cannot create a new k2 item using your api
is this possible also?

I am guessing this will require some collaboration between the Fabrik and Selfget teams. I would imagine that the Fabrik 'list' which is essentially a data table be accessed via the jbackend API. The Fabrik lists can be seen by calling the fabirk component in the URL and specifying the list and mode. Example:

index.php?option=com_fabrik&view=list&listid=13

option=com_fabrik call the fabrik component
view=list data list or detail of record
listid=13 list identifier

I think query's or filters can be passed in the URL. There is a section in the Fabrik wiki that goes into great detail on this.

fabrikar.com/forums/index.php?wiki/filtering-lists-tables/

I think that would bring back or set the variables for all the data, and jbackend might be able to grab all the variables and present them through the REST.

I imagine posting is far more complex but should still be possible.
