Great to see such an active help forum especially for a (rather nervous) newbie such as me.
I have used the sticky post to change my "non www" to "www" but also need to get rid of .index.php just on my home page because for SEO purposes it is seen as duplicate content how do I do this?

Well the right way to do this is not with a redirect, but enabling the SEO options in the Joomla site's settings. This could require to enable also the .htaccess file on your web root folder (by default is htaccess.txt).
